AGE AT ONSET OF EATING DISORDERS:

  • 86% report onset by the age of 20*
  • 10% report onset at age 10 or younger
  • 33% report onset between ages of 11-15
  • 43% report onset between ages of 16-20

DURATION OF ILLNESS/MORTALITY:

  • 77% report duration from 1-15 years*
  • 30% report duration from 1-5 years
  • 31% report duration from 6-10 years
  • 16% report duration from 11-15 years
  • It is estimated that 6% of serious cases die
  • Only 50% report being cured

Eating Disorders (EDs) such as compulsive eating or binge eating (anorexia nervosa and bulimia):

EDUCATION: COMPULSIVE EATING DISORDERS PREVENTION AND EARLY DETECTION

Compulsive eating disorders are rampant in our society, yet few states in the nation have adequate programs or services to combat anorexia nervosa, bulimia and compulsive eating or binge eating. Only a small number of schools and colleges have programs to educate our youth about the dangers of eating disorders and the social anxiety, low self-esteem or behavior disorders that may be associated with it.
