KARLA STEINGRABER, Psy.D. PRESIDENT & LICENSED CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST

Karla Steingraber, Psy.D. Karla Steingraber, Psy.D. completed her BA at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina and earned her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. She completed her internship at McGill's teaching hospital, the Montreal General Hospital (MGH), with rotations in the Psychiatry Department of the ER, transitional day program, and in MUSIC, the LGBT clinic where she conducted individual, couples, family, and ongoing group therapy. She worked with issues relating to sexual orientation, relationships and marriage, and substance use. Dr. Steingraber finished her residency in neuropsychology in Sheridan, Wyoming while working for a residential treatment program for adults with a brain injury and brain trauma.

She also has worked as the head of various multidisciplinary treatment teams for a residential facility for individuals with a developmental disability, and in outpatient practices where she began a support group program with grant funding from the Department of Child and Family Services (DFS) for foster parents and foster children, to assist foster parents with understanding the manifestations of trauma and learning how to parent children exhibiting unusual and difficult behaviors. Accomplishments of the group included statistically significant reduction in anxiety in foster parents, increase in self-esteem and success in parenting, and reduction in reliance on emergency phone calls to the clinic and DFS. 

Dr. Steingraber has extensive experience supervising doctoral-level psychology interns at an APA-approved training site.

In January of 2009 she opened her own private practice while continuing to contract with other group practices in Barrington, Highland Park, Deerfield, and nursing homes, maintaining a geriatric client base.

She presently works in private practice in Northbrook and Park Ridge and runs an ANAD support group at Highland Park Hospital for eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and compulsive eating or binge eating. Despite her diverse experiences and background, she considers herself a specialist in child development and parenting work as well as suicide prevention and issues that arise in LGBT relationships and adults dealing with life transitions.

Her work includes conducting individual and group therapy with adults and adolescents, and play therapy with children, while also offering parent guidance. She specializes in counseling LGBT couples in relationship problems and partners in gay marriages. She provides psychological, emotional, and cognitive testing, as well as neuro-psychological screenings to assess for damage resulting from brain trauma, brain changes in cancer survivors due to chemotherapy, and the long-term effects of concussions. She is actively involved in Good Shepherd's weight-management program. She has been leading an ANAD support group for compulsive eating disorders at Highland Park Hospital since 2009. She is certified in QPR to train lay people in suicide prevention by recognizing signs of suicidal thinking and encouraging early intervention to prevent attempts at suicide.

Most recently she opened up a second office as part of her private practice in Park Ridge. She has joined the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce, was recently made the Associate Chair of the Early Career Psychologist (ECP) Section of the Illinois Psychological Association (IPA), and maintains active membership in the IPA, American Psychological Association (APA), and the North Shore Alliance for Psychotherapists (NSAP).

ANN HARRIMAN, M.A. THERAPIST

Ann Harriman, MA Ann L. Harriman, M.A. received her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Illinois She completed her M.A. in Counseling at New York University. She also studied psychotherapy at the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis. Here she incorporated an emphasis on child development and trauma into her approach to insight-oriented therapy.

She has extensive experience in education and management at Talbot Perkins Children's Services, The Center for Independence of the Disabled in New York, and The Roycemore School in Evanston, Illinois. Additionally, Ms. Harriman worked with refugees from Central America suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and currently volunteers at the Marjorie Kovler Center for Refugees as a bilingual therapist. She has helped adults, children and families with issues related to foster care, adoption, substance abuse, depression, anxiety and siblings with disabilities. For her work with underserved populations, Ms. Harriman received New York University's Philip J. Zlatchen Award for Courage in Serving Humanity.

Since 2010, Ms. Harriman has co-facilitated the ANAD support group for individuals with compulsive eating disorders and their families. She also assists returning veterans with readjustment issues and individuals with physical disabilities suffering from secondary stress and trauma.


ROBIN G. FREEDMAN, M.A., LCPC PSYCHOTHERAPY & COLLEGE & CAREER COUNSELING SERVICES

Robin G. Freedman received her BA from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and her MA in Community Counseling from Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut. She is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in Illinois. Additionally, Ms Freedman is licensed in Connecticut as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and in New York as a Licensed Mental Health Clinician (LMHC). In addition, she is certified by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) as a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and is a member of the American Counseling Association.

Ms. Freedman has been a practicing psychotherapist & career counselor for over 14 years. She has worked in several private group practices and had her own private practice in Connecticut for over 10 years. For several years, she was on the part-time staff as a counselor in the Counseling Center at Western Connecticut State University. In the summer of 2008, she worked as a Military & Family Life Consultant on the U.S. Army Base in Weisbaden, Germany as part of DoDEA/CYP Summer Enrichment Program. Here, she worked with children at the summer school enrichment program, the adolescents at the Teen Center and their families. Recently, Ms. Freedman has conducted a creative arts therapy group in Andersonville based on the Artist's Way and facilitated a support group for military parents (active, veterans, etc.) in Elk Grove, Illinois, now being held in Schaumburg, Illinois. She has facilitated self-esteem groups for college women, stress management groups and creativity groups for individuals coping with cancer. Additionally she has conducted numerous workshops and presentations for university/college students, public schools and community venues.

Ms. Freedman works with children 7 years of age and older, adolescents and adults through seniors. She works with individuals as well as couples and families. Her areas of interest and specialization include anxiety, depression, post-partum depression, parenting issues, childhood behavioral issues and adolescent issues, grief and loss, coping with and surviving cancer, creativity, stress management, military & veterans' readjustment issues, workplace and legal issues, college and career counseling.

Ms. Freedman provides psychotherapy from an educational, developmental and holistic perspective. She works in partnership with her clients, utilizing a cognitive/behavioral framework when appropriate. Therapy is goal directed and brief solution-focused with an eclectic and integrated utilization of interventions to include creative therapy and relaxation techniques. Ms. Freedman assists her clients in working through major life and career transitions, to achieve an enhanced sense of well-being and balance in their lives.

Ms. Freedman College Bound Counseling and Consulting Services are offered to freshman through senior high school students and can be tailored to the individual student's needs. The College Counseling Services are designed to cover the basic research involved in choosing a college or universitiy to attend, narrowing down the choices, the application process, college essay and editing process and making the college/university decision choice. Again, services are added and edited according to an individual student's needs.

Career Counseling Services are provided to those new to the work world, those in career transition, displaced workers or those returning to work after years away. Career inventories and testing is available as well as interpretation and evaluation.
